Bishop's Stortford High School pupil Freddie Dewar excels for Great Britain at C13 Futsal World Cup
Bishop's Stortford High School student Freddie Dewar is eyeing selection for next year's European Championships after enjoying an excellent C13 Futsal World Cup.
The Year 8 pupil scored three goals and claimed seven assists as Great Britain came ninth out of 12 teams in the Asociacion Mundial de Futsal event, for players born in 2006, in Spain.
It was the first time a futsal team representing Great Britain had competed at any age group in an official futsal tournament. Futsal is a five-a-side variation on football played on a hard court.
Dewar's side were drawn in a tough group alongside eventual champions Paraguay, Colombia and Switzerland, and they also played France and had a second game against the Swiss.
Dewar played in all five fixtures as they beat Switzerland on both occasions and saw off the French, with the matches against Colombia and Paraguay - the most successful adult teams in futsal history - both ending in defeat.
Dewar, 13, lives in Dunmow and has been a Colchester United academy player since under-eights. He is also part of the Football Association of Wales' national development squad as he qualifies to play for Wales through his grandfather.
After winning the tournament, the Paraguay youngsters were welcomed home by thousands of fans at the airport and got to meet their country's president Mario Abdo Benitez.
